This year The Open Air Museum of Lithuania celebrates its 50th anniversary. In June 1974, it was opened to visitors. When the museum was opened, seven homesteads were arranged. They consisted of various purpose buildings, small architecture, gardens, and apiaries.
The museum was created not only by architects, restorers, and ethnographers but also by people from all over Lithuania who enriched the museum’s exhibitions with their stories, memories, and household items.
Today, the Lithuanian Ethnographic Museum is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe in terms of area (195 hectares) and the number of immovable exhibits (155 units). It is the only museum in Lithuania that presents all ethnographic regions (Dzūkija, Highlands, Suvalkija, Samogitia, and Lithuania Minor), a small town and a manor. A separate sector is dedicated to commemorating the Lithuanian people’s exile and resistance.
The exhibition „The Open Air Museum of Lithuania: the Beginning“ is open from the 1st of May until 30th of September, 2024 in the Pušalotas House in the Museum‘s Town.
